Melvin D. Salsman

August 12, 1929 — June 25, 2024

Long Beach

Mel was born on August 12, 1929, in Clayton, New Mexico, to the late Jesse and Verna Salsman. Mel and his family moved to Napa in 1935 where they lived a simple life with humble beginnings. There Mel enjoyed picking peaches on his aunt’s farm. He remembered those days with a smile as his belly was always full and he enjoyed helping his family. At the tender age of 7 Mel landed his first job as a paperboy in his small town, covering several neighborhoods. He love delivering papers and grabbing a cheese sandwich on his way home, where he found his favorite dog, Blackie, waiting for him. Mel continued his paper route for years, contributing to supporting his family and instilling in him a strong work ethic. Years later Mel attended Napa high school where he left his mark as a multi-sport athlete. He played football and was captain of the varsity basketball team. After graduating Mel struck out on his own, working tirelessly as a magazine salesman to support himself. He was a natural salesman, becoming a top performer while traveling across all 50 states . At the age of 21, however, Mel had to step away from magazine sales to enter the military. Despite being offered a place in officer school, he chose a different path. After completing his service Mel returned to life on the road and magazine sales, this time a manager of many and once again realizing great success.

By 1960 Mel found himself in San Diego, California. It was there he met and married his wife, Andria, to whom he was married for 63 years. The couple settled in Long Beach in 1962, just after the arrival of their first child, Anna Lynne. Daughter, Elizabeth, and beloved son, Jess, followed in 1964 and 1966. After the birth of his children, Mel attended UCLA studying business. Driven by his passion and talent for selling Mel ventured into real estate achieving numerous victories in ‘multiple listings’ contests within the city of Long Beach. His passion for community service eventually led him to pursue a role in local politics and run for city councilman. One of the most memorable parts of the campaign was the support his family gave him, turning their cars into mobile billboards and proclaiming Mel’s greatness with megaphones. Although he never won the position, he never lost his commitment to serving others and remained a respected figure in Long Beach, known for his leadership and passion for serving his community.

In addition to his love of work and family, Mel enjoyed entertaining with Andria. Their home was always full of people and they were always hosting a celebration. If there was a reason to celebrate, the Salsman home was the place to be. He was a generous host with a huge heart for all the guest that came to his beautiful home! Mel loved taking his place behind ‘the bar’ in their family home, engaging beloved friends at their Famous Annual Christmas Party and serving up a favorite beverage. Mel and Andria also enjoyed bowling together and traveling the world with their three children. Greece was a favorite destination where Mel was the Greek family treasure…beloved by Andria’s large extended family.

In 1961, before marrying Andria, Mel had been converted to the Greek Orthodox faith. This became a profound inspiration, influencing his deep involvement in the local Greek church, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In his many years as a member Mel gave tirelessly to his church community. He served as President of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, and also the Ahepa for two terms. He was the GOYA sports chair where he dedicated himself to coaching his three children and the entire community GOYA basketball for many years. At the games the crowd absolutely loved Mel’s energy from the bench. His fiery passion for winning was unmistakable as he never hesitated to challenge referees on their calls, his animated gestures and booming voice turned nearly every game into an exhibition. Many began to refer to him as the ‘Pat Riley’ of GOYA basketball coaches, admiring his intense dedication and charismatic leadership. In fact, Mel was so beloved that in 1993 he earned the esteemed title Father of the Year, a testament to his cherished role in the community and countless contributions.

Whether in business or personal relationships Mel listened attentively and genuinely cared for others. He had enormous wisdom and was a Political machine and loved sharing his theories with the world. He was a profoundly decent man who always sought to uplift and encourage those around him. His legacy is one of kindness, optimism and a relentless dedication to those he loved.

Mel would like to be remembered as a man who loved God, his family, his community and his country. He is survived by his loving wife, Andria; three children Anna Xeros (Nicholas) of Long Beach, Elizabeth Nestos (William) of Chicago and Jess Salsman of Irvine; and 13 grandchildren: John (33), Andrew (32), Peter (30), Melina (21), Billy (21), Spiro (20), Melanie (28), Alexandra (28), Hailey (27), Savas (9), Christiana (9), Mel (5) and Mahie (5) and his great grandchild, James (1).
